MICKI CHOMICKI
THE RATTAN PROJECT
2017 - 2024
Micki Chomicki is an artist and designer; she develops since 2013 installations and objects, using synthetic hair as media. She selects vintage rattan objects for the subtility of their shapes, convenient backbones for crafting the hair.
Mixing synthetic fiber colors just as paint, she weaves, interlace, braid, twist, bristle, and knot, the hair onto the rattan structure, and patterns echo the lines of the rattan stalks .
This unexpected association of rattan and hair gives birth to a unique collection of extraordinary objects each year, and all are designed to preserve their functional use.
Micki Chomicki creates her own surreal world, where objets are reinvented and magically transformed, by melting their original shape into fluffy and baroque sihouettes.
Their strong personality seduce amateurs of rare objects, and unique pieces collectors.
Currently, Micki Chomicki is deeper exploring techniques of burning and melting synthetic fiber, for large wall projects.
Upcoming too, long pieces of hair embroidery on nets worked as phantomatic dresses hanging from the ceiling.
These two developments tempt to step beyond rattan, and free the shapes even further.
Micki Chomicki lives and works in Antwerp.
